Crash cuts a swathe through Poland’s elite

The President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, and some 80 members of Poland’s elite have been killed in a plane crash in Russia. They were flying from Warsaw to Smolensk to take part in the commemoration in the Katyn forest marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of tens of thousands of Polish prisoners of war by the Narodnyj Komissariat Wnutriennich Diel (NKWD) the Soviet secret police. It has been reported that a wing of the presidential plane clipped a tree as it circled the airport in thick fog.

There are no survivors. The following passengers were checked in at Warsaw airport to fly on the plane before it took off.

  1. Virtuti, not virtutti. Kapituła, btw, we translated as ‚chapter’ rather than ‚award committee’ when these two members were at the book-launch of ‚Silent and Unseen’ with General Bałuk.

    Every time I look at this list, the tragedy deepens.

      ‚Virtuti’ corrected. (Must check if Firefox has a Latin spell-checker.) Re ‚kapituła’ you may well be right that ‚chapter’ is the officially approved translation in the context of this award. However, I am battling against over pompous and obscure renderings of Polish into English and as ‚award committee’ describes exactly what this ‚kapituła’ actually does, ‚award committee’ it stays!
